Because Every Child Has A Right To Read

So I got to know of Pratham Books when R was about 1.5 years old. I read about it on a blog and then went to their website and I must admit my jaw dropped looking at the wonderful content and the awesome prices they had. I actually didnt believe it. So I went to Crossword to check if the prices were true. Unfortunately, Crossword didnt have (still doesnt, dont know why!) Pratham books. So I decided to take a risk (yes at that time, I really thought of it as a risk) and picked up their offer of some 8 books for the price of 6 and asked them to send it to me.

It came promptly and honest to God, I was shocked to see such wonderful stories being told in a colourful way and at such rates. Their books range from Rs.10 to Rs. 40 (thats the max I have paid till date) and what wonderful books.

Daddy’s Mo, Sringeri Srinivas (Annual Haircut Day), See you Tomorrow, Aunty Jui’s Baby, Nayana and the Not So Scary Owl, The Colourful Pencils, Susheela’s Kolam, Paplu The Giant, Aloo-Maloo-Kaloo, I could go on and on and on. I think R has at least 20-25 Pratham books. In Hindi and in English, put together.

And then I realised that these are really affordable and make excellent return gifts to her school and daycare kids. With giving 50 for her school and 50 for her daycare, honestly, it usually gets too expensive for us to afford very costly gifts. And more importantly, what better than give such wonderful books to children, who knows, they may start liking and reading it. So for the past two birthdays, I have been bulk ordering books for R’s return gifts from Pratham and again I must admit, they send them across neatly packed and in great condition. Infact they even put in a few free copies for the brat to read :):)

And then I did their Pratham Books Champion’s Program last year, chewing Maya’s brains till the last minute with doubts and getting the book etc. This year I couldnt do it due to some personal constraints, but I would love to do it every year if possible.

Why did I write this post? Well basically for the few people who read my blog, I want to tell them about the lovely books that Pratham Books publishes in absolutely affordable rates.

and secondly, Pratham Books is a finalist for the Google Impact Awards.

If you people have like 2 minutes, please do go and vote for this wonderful organisation which is trying its best to get a book in every child’s hand. Click on this link to take you to the right link to vote for Pratham.

  1. Pratham has a programme called ‘Library in a classroom’. Please check out the details on their website. Various packages are available, ideal for donating to NGOs and/or schools that do not have libraries due to fund constraints.
