RD is going to Sabarimalai in Feb and hence has started praying every evening. (errr…he prays short cut the other days, now a days he is in the long way mode π )
R asked me one day why I dont pray like Appa does?
I told her ‘well, Appa believes in prayers and waise bhi if Appa is praying, then I dont need to, he is doing it for the family, and you dont HAVE to pray as such, prayers may have other forms’
R looked into my eyes and said ‘Well, aap bahut lazy ho, iske liye nahi karte ho na?’
Expect the spawn of your womb to figure out who you are exactly eh?
As a part of the prayers, RD puts vibuthi on my forehead and on R’s
Earlier, RD used to do it everyday for R but for the past month, she shakes her head away whenever he tries to do it.
RD has tried everything from cajoling to telling it lovingly to putting just a bit, she refuses.
I thought, since RD gets all very enthused and puts a big blob on our head with force which looks like a big white full moon slightly stretched on the head, she doesnt like it…
So, I told him to be a bit gentle with her and try.
When Amma was around, R would put it. but other wise she refuses.
On last Wed, I asked her, kya hua R, why arent you putting it, its just a small bit
R: Mereko acha nahi lagta
RM: Why da?
R: Baas aise hi
RM: But Appa has become so gentle with it, even then you dont like it?
R: Because everyone calls me a Malayali girl, I dont want to be Malayali girl, I want to be Gujarati girl
I was shocked for a second…
RM: But who called you Malayali girl
R: My friend K
RM: But when did you put vibuthi and go to school, Amma doesnt put for you in the morning
R: pehele appa ne dala two days, when you were unwell and then K called me malayali girl, I dont like it
RM: But whats wrong in being a Malayali girl
R: I dont know
RM: Then why not put it…and anyways, just by putting vibuthi you dont become any kind of girl
R: I dont like it
RM: But Amma is a malayali girl and so is Thathi..whats wrong with us?
R: You have spots on your face
I was definitely shocked..I didnt know what to tell her..and I do have loads of spots on my face
RM: So whats wrong with that?
R: Well, Appa doesnt have it
RM: Right, but amma has and I want to know whats wrong in having spots
R: Mereko acha nahi lagta
RM: Agreed, but does our spots make us bad?Do we have bad manners?
R: No, you are nice Amma
RM : Exactly. Having spots or not having spots doesnt make anyone good, bad, malayali or Gujarati. At the end of the day, its your manners and good behaviour which make you a nice person. Suppose you have a friend who is very pretty, but keeps being rude, will you call her a good girl?
R: nahi
RM: So thats what?
She didnt say anything after that..she touched my spotted face and looked away.
WE stopped the discussion there………
=========
today morning…
I am trying to comb my unruly hairΒ into a bun, while R is ‘reading’ the book, Sudhagee gave us
I like the book Amma she says
Just to bug her, I ask ‘what do you like more?Β – reading or watching TV
R: Mereko both acha lagta hai
RM: Good
R: But you know mere sabse zyada kya acha lagta hai
RM: Sleeping..no no..wait..eating
R giggles..nahi nahi
RM:Dancing, jumping, running
R: no no no
RM: then what?
R: Woh jo abhi apne hair bana rahi hai (the one who is combing her hair right now )

I LOVED this post, RM. Loved the way you convinced R about the spots. π I am going to come back to this page when I have kids, and ask you for parenting advice. π You are so good at explaining things in a way that kids can easily understand. Honestly.
LOL @ aap bahut lazy ho, isliye? π
Awwww @ the last part of your post. That is so so so cute! π
Awww..you are being sweet…I dont know honestly if I took the right approach…I hope she understands that in the long run, physical beauty is actually not important π¦
Thanks π
Loved the title of the post, BTW. π
so darn cute π
π
……….. priceless!
π thanks π
kids and what they think when is a complex puzzle. But they never fail to win hearts every now & then π
Hugs to little R

Hugs will be passed
Love her comment…..that is just so sweet.
thanks Jayashree
Oh my! I melted at the last line. R sweetheart, loads and loads of hugs and kisses for you. May you always be the sweet sweet person you are.
RM, big giant extra special hug to you as well for teaching her all the right things.
Hugs and kisses will be passedto the brat π
thanks for that extra special hug…I was getting worried of keeping on passing hugs and having none myself π
Awesome! You really explained to R very well that spots/blemishes don’t matter. The 2nd part is too cute! Kids have a way with words.
Thanks Chattywren π
Give a tight hug to R from me, okay! π
will be passed π
Love this little girl! Give her a tight squeeze for me please!
LOL Squeeze shall be passed π
Wow that was indeed a great post. I applaud the way you handled the conversation and I really sprouted a couple of tears when I read the last line by R. I think the point of beauty or not has got drilled to her mind very well now.
Thanks Mathangi…I dont know whether the point got drilled or not..but I am hoping she understands that external beauty is not the deciding factor about a person!
I am shocked these kids are under age of 5 and they think so much..mallu and gijju girl. And as others said you handled it very well..LOL aap lazy ho isely pooja nahi karte, guess only daughters can undertsand their mum the best π
Reading the last para itself made my heart mushy, can understand your feeling…big hugs to the little princess π
I was shocked myself rey π¦
Trust u to manage the q tht will send others into moral-sankat with non-chalance π
you think so? I dont know rey Meena whether I handled it correctly…I just hope she gets my point eventually
Totally awwwww! And she understands so well, and u said it all well too π
Thanks Swaram π
Hah! The last part must have made you melt on the floor…. but you’ll never admit it!
About the malayali girls bit… I m a little shocked that she is getting into all this at this age! π
And what’s this about malayali girls having spots on the face? What did she mean – pimples? Or pigmentation?
By vibhuti you meant bhasmam is it?
no no…she didnt say malayali girls have spots on the face…she meant her Amma had spots on the face π yes, I do have loads of spots due to pimple leftovers π
yes yes bhasmam only
Wonderful post RM. just for this 2 bear hugs to the sweet little girl and 4 hugs to you.
Awww..thanks for those hugs
Touche to the lazy Mom!!! *grinning*
And seriously with Kids you never what clicks and what doesn’t. They need to be handled with extra soft hands na?
And Awwwww! To the last one π
Totally touche π
yes they do need to be handled with care…I was pretty upset then honestly
She made up for the previous word eh? And kids get so influenced by their peers too. It gets tougher to get them to understand us as their world begins to expand…
yes they do get very influenced π¦
“Having spots or not having spots doesnt make anyone good, bad, malayali or Gujarati. At the end of the day, its your manners and good behaviour which make you a nice person. ” Kudos to you. I am going to remember this wisdom when Zini comes to me with such concern.
R made me also all mushy mushy with the last line….Love and kisses to her…
Kisses and love will be passed
She is a ccccutttie, Can I borrow her for some days RM…..
oh please please please do anytime π
Awwww… I loved the first incident and double loved the second incident…
:):)
Gosh RM, my niece did the same thing. She tells her Mom about their servant being dark and that she does not like her but again plays and enjoys a lot with her. My sis explained just like you did. Hope she understands. And yaayy on the 2. π
I hope so too!
Awwwwww π I’m sure I’ve said this already, but R is sooooo adorable!
It might be ignorant of me, because you’ve written about this before, but what is Sabarmalai? π
Sabarimalai is a religious place in Kerala
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabarimala
Thanks! Will check it out.
You are awesome, I loved teh way you handled.Malayali girl and spots her observation is good, I have lot of spots too..now its kinda becoming like holes coz of aging π¦
