How the Mouse (Errr..R) Made Words

So there is this book, Mouse Makes Words  which someone gave R…

Let me clarify, R cant read anything okie..she just recognizes Capital Alphabets..meaning A B C D…till Z…she cant even recognize the small alphabets meaning a b c d..till z…

So in this book there are three letter words which a mouse makes by replacing the alphabets…and we have read this book a lot of times…we meaning I read, R pretends to look into it while biting her nails, or sucking her thumb or playing with her hair etc etc etc before we hit the bed

So day before yesterday evening RD was late from work and I was trying to multi task putting on the machine, folding the clothes, cooking the dinner, cursing RD etc etc

and R said ‘amma, zara mera books dena’

I randomly picked up 5 and said sit and read dont pakao me…

R: okie, I wont pakao you 🙂

RM: thank you

and R starts reading…

This what she does

She says the first four pages by heart and I just stare at her shocked because I  know for sure SHE CANT READ

Then she says take the word fan, move away the F, cart in a V and you get V-A-N Van – WHAT she can read???

I am thrilled, I have  an Einstein   a Shakespeare in making and all that…I want to call up RD to tell him what a wonderful child  the spawn of our my womb is and tell my parents and in laws that their grandchild is a genius..how we are going to have a tryst with destiny and all that…

I imagine writing all this on the blog so that when she grows up she knows what a child genius she was..I am getting carried away by the thoughts, my eyes are brimmed with tears at my genius when
when she turns the page and says Take the word POT remove the P, move in the C and you get C-O-T – sleeping!!!!

and phhhhhussssssshhhh! my khalayi  (Imaginary) balloon deflates…I am like..oh! she is looking at the pictures and identifying the words!!!!
Read on

1) Take the word W-I-G  = cap remove the W and put in the P and you get P-I-G – pig…

RM: Arey WIG is wig not cap…
R: okie..

2) Take the word N-E-T = net, remove the N, move in a P – you get P-E-T = parrot

RM: Its P-E-T – Pet
R: but amma yeh toh parrot hai na…
RM: Yes beta, but the word is Pet which can be any animal which you keep at home
R: P-E-T – bounty  (thats the name of one of the numerous pet dogs in our building)
RM: Rolls eyes

3) Take the word T-E-N  – yeh kya hai amma,

RM: Ten
R: okie..so Take the word T-E-N, move away the T, get in the H and you get H-E-N  – Car
RM: HEN is car???
R: yahan pe toh Car ka photo hai na

apparently they have depicted the car bringing in the H!

4) She ends up saying

The mouse is…the mouse is…the mouse is

RM: What R? the mouse is what?
R: the mouse is ‘thaking’ his work is done

RM:Thaking?
R: arey amma, the mouse is thak gaya (tired)
RM: Tired R, Tired!

R: okie, mouse is tired gaya, his work is done

RM: !!!

And thats how the mouse errr…R made words!

  1. LOL! Lovely post.

But don’t be discouraged. This is called sight-reading and it’s how they do it in most Montessori schools, so your little one is indeed off to a very good and bright start 🙂

    • R's Mom says:

Awwww! M4..thats so sweet of you to comment..long time eh?

Just read about YO at your blog..he is so cute 🙂

good and bright start is it..chalo acha hai…feels good to know that 🙂

  2. RS says:

Awww! Thats so nice! And the fact that she sat in one place and was not ‘pakaofying’ you IS a big deal ok?!

And what? She can already read A-Z capitals is it? So when should I begin teaching? And you tell her stories and read books every night? God! I put him on the bed and go to sleep before he does! If I make the mistake of reading a story-he wont stop at all!

    • R's Mom says:

Errr…dont start teaching Chutku please..he is too young…R’s school I think is going too fast 😦

Yes thats one thing I do sincerely however late it is…we read books (note the plural) at night together 🙂

  3. VJ says:

Hey Seriously though.. thats how they start reading.. based on photographic memory.Be ready.. sooner than later she will be reading and all those Shakespeare dreams are going to be fulfilled.

  4. varsha says:

R is still a genius . She was able to associate things 🙂

  5. Seema says:

ROFL on ‘the mouse is ’thaking’ his work is done’.

Lotttsa luv to R. She doesn’t have to be a child prodigy for you to be proud of her. She is genius in her own way. Tell her that her Seema Masi is proud of her. When are you coming to Blore by the way? Did you start maskafying RD or not?

  6. summerscript says:

LOL , the mouse is thaking!! 😛
I love this little mouse, my hugs and kisses 🙂

  7. zephyr says:

Sounds like my nephew reciting the alphabets: C for billi, D for kutta, etc. But as M4 says, he was genius and so is R, doing sight reading and all 🙂

  8. smitha says:

Awwww!! She is so smart! For a three year old this is awesome!!

And the books need to make more sense, how can they show a car when the word says hen!!!!! Not fair!!!!

  9. Ramya says:

R 100% is genius… c’mon atleast she remembers so much out of ur reading the book… Go on and get proud RM 🙂

  10. Ashwathy says:

I randomly picked up 5 and said sit and read dont pakao me…

R: okie, I wont pakao you

    RM: thank you
Did she actually say that? 😯
LOL! 😆 She is really turning out your daughter by every habit! 😛

Hahaha…. that girl is far smarter than you give her credit for! !! 😀 😀 This post is super cute!
And in fact she is identifying all pictures correctly and even asking look it shows pic of car, so why are you saying hen? 😐
Her sense of logic and reasonining are fine 🙂 You still have a little genius in the making 😉

And whatever were the …er… book makers thinking when they show a car instead of a hen!!! 😯 As it is the world is a difficult place to live in without people confusing little kids! 🙄 Sheesh! 😛

    • R's Mom says:

oh yes..she did say that 🙂

little genius in the making kuch nahi…she is one big nautanki 🙂

arey like I said earlier, there was a picture of the hen on the next page..she was just being very impatient 🙂

  11. Lovely post! Had fun reading it! 🙂 🙂
And now, you are passing on one big hug from S&S auntie to R, okay!! 😀 😀

  12. Sumana says:

That was a nice job R. Hugs and more to you. RM, I am not sure whether you were pakaofying her or R. Finally mouse thak gaya and so was R. I am with the brat and support her totally.

  13. Bikram says:

So this is not R fault its the book people they should have appropriate pictures ti display.

    R is genius. Bless her….

  14. ROFL at ‘thaking’…from what I’ve read of your blog so far, sounds like R has got Bombay-Hinglish down pat! 🙂 She’s still learning…sounds like she’ll definitely pick it up. She obviously knows her sounds! 🙂

  15. Smita says:

Stop harrassing the poor child. She is identifying the picture correctly and what more do u want haan? Bolo bolo tell tell!!!! 😀

But R is a total hugworthy material. She should be hugged everytime she utters a word like thaking 😀

So pass on numerous hugs to her and teach her a new sentence *aao hugaain* 😉

  16. vandana says:

even though she cannot actually read it but remembers the words is quite good ..even my son does the same reading story books without actually reading a word 🙂

  17. Laila says:

R is such a cutie pie… and, she IS a genius… it’s not a joke to remember everything so well…

  18. Tanishka says:

I’m telling you she is actually a genius… She actually managed to make you believe that she can read…. Way to R, only that mommy is a lil slow in discovering our genius cuttie…. 🙂

  19. popbiscuit says:

This had me in splits. The mouse is “thaking” is sooooo cute. I hope my future kids can speak in mutiple languages like R here with gusto and sometimes get them mixed up like this to entertain us!

    • R's Mom says:

hey how you doing…long time 🙂 hope things are fine 🙂

hahahhaha your future kids shouldnt be speaking like R…you will go crazy trying to decipher the different between amma come and amma va..(the amma come is for amma come here, the amma va is for amma su-su is coming :))

  20. NBose says:

lotz of love to sweet mouse….btw, wen u started reading books fr R at bedtime….means hw old was R?
I gt one board book, bt Mishti seems more interested in eating it!!!!

    • R's Mom says:

R was about 9 months I guess..but I know of mothers in the blogworld who start as early as 15 days…go ahead and read a while…M may sleep off, but continue it as a slow habit…just a waring, sometimes when you are dog tired (which I am most days) and totally want to sleep, the demand for reading books can get VERY irritating 🙂

Errr…R still ‘eats’ her books 🙂 so go ahead and let her taste it

  21. anisnest says:

ROTFL… cute little mouse.. give her a hug on my behalf…
so is this the word for me today RM? thak means “tired” is it?

  22. Pepper says:

I am a fan of the little mouse you have. Give her to me for sometime please? I won’t make fun of her intelligence the way you do. Do you know how much intellect it takes to make words seeing pictures at that age?

And please! Stop correcting her like that. If she wants to say ‘thaking’, she will say it. I don’t see anything wrong in that okay? You first learn to construct a sentence in a single language yourself 😛 .. Really, how do you expect her to not make a jumble if you do it yourself?!

    • R's Mom says:

yaa yaa right…you keep her for a day and you will decide never to have kids :):)

thaking – Pepper imagine her going to her school and saying teacher my amma is thaking every day!!!!

  23. Tharani says:

Ha ha ha… Mouse tired gaya.. ha ha ha..Cute she is.. Shall I call you some day just to listen to her talking???

  24. This is super awesome for someone her age,you don’t think? 🙂 Kids these days!!!! 😀

  25. A mouse or a chicken driving a car shouldn’t be teaching kids words. Its so confusing.Pleaaaase bring back the fox, fish & monster frm the prev story!! 😦

  26. dipali says:

This was just so cute!!!! She’ll be really reading before you know it!
