Nuggets of Wisdom

I was in Goa a few months ago for a conference and had the priviledge to meet a lady (first meeting with her) from our Houston office who is a mother of four, grand mom to three and looks 35 (seriously!) she is an afro american lady who has really made it big in a field dominated mostly by white men…

After the conference, I got to spend about 1.5 hours walking with her on the beach and each of the minute that I spent with her, I think was worth it…

here are a few things she told me

1) Be committed to your work but never let it become more important than your family
2) Give your work 100% but the day you think you are bored of it, change your job
3) Once your kids are born, dont neglect your husband, remember that the kids are eventually going to go away, your husband will be with you till the end of your life
4) If your husband does something you dont approve of, dont fight, explain and if he still wants to do it, go ahead and let him do it (of course, he should do the same with you if you are in a fair relationship)
5) If your husband does something that turns out to be bad and you had warned him, dont say the obvious ‘ I told you so’ let him think about it and eventually just let him know that you did not agree with him, but its okie (because most things in life are ok eventually unless its a matter of life and death)
6) Treat your child with respect, if you want respect in return
7) Spending quality time with your child is much more important than spending the whole day at home and not caring about your child
8) Never feel guilty of being a working mom, She says ‘after my four kids have grown up they are proud fo the fact that I raised them and continued with my job…for them its a matter of pride’..

Most of what she said made a lot of sense to me and I am so glad I met up with her πŸ™‚

I have been wanting to put this down for a long time but somehow it never happened…

Thank you YB πŸ™‚
